If the album doesn't really work as a collection, despite the individual talents and performances included, that may suggest that "the blues" has long-since become an umbrella term covering many different musical styles, not all of which work well together. is a curious choice, even with Jeff Beck on hand.

But that is in keeping with the series of films on which the five-CD set and this highlights disc are based. Feel Like Going Home is the first of seven films collectively known as Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues, where different directors from Wim Wenders to Clint Eastwood were drafted in to look at different aspects of the blues, and they all have their different methods, with historical documentary, contemporary interviews. The last are among the best aspects of the DVDs, as the bonus material features the sets only complete tunes. Purists may object reasonably that it covers a very wide range, from the rural blues of Robert Johnson to the Southern rock of the Allman Brothers Band and the - what can one call it? - designer blues of Keb' Mo'. At the very least, it contains many indisputably classic blues performances by some of the indisputably major blues artists. But the way one judges this disc may depend upon whether it is trying to be "the best of the blues" or "the best of 'The Blues.'" It hasn't much hope of being the former, but as a one-CD sampler of the five-CD set, it does just fine. Even if all of that other material didn't make it clear, the absurdity of reducing the blues to a one-hour, 17-track album would be obvious anyway.

And you might say it all boiled down to this single-disc distillation, which draws upon the vaults of major labels Universal and Sony.

A powerful and inspiring look to the Birth of The Blues.A massive media campaign comprising seven documentary films broadcast on public television and released as a DVD box set, plus accompanying soundtrack albums, a 13-part radio series, a companion book, 12 individual artist compilations, and a five-CD box set, The Blues, executive produced by filmmaker Martin Scorsese, threatened to be even more all-pervasive than Ken Burns' Jazz project, after which it was clearly patterned. Blues Fans will think this is the best thing since The Blues and I think it will like mine open up whether they are young or old to The Blues and just get them started off watch this to see how it developed originally. I am yet to see the rest of the episodes Directed by Clint Eastwood, Wim Wenders etc but if they are anything like this then this will go down as one of the greatest series ever of it's kind. I was wondering where that sound came from and now I kind of know. The very first scene in FLGH where two black men are holding a drum to them and another one is using the whistle instrument sounds just like the music used in the scene in GONY. Louis Blues 1.5 Muddy Water (A Mississippi Moan) 1.6 Matchbox Blues 1.7 Bill Lyons and Stack O' Lee 1.8 'Ma ' Rainey's Black Bottom 1.9 Dark Was the Night - Cold Was the Ground 1.10 Savoy Blues 1.11.

Listen to the music in the background whilst Amsterdam is holding his fathers hand. 1.1 Shortnin (Henduck) 1.2 Long John 1.3 Crazy Blues 78RPM Version 1.4 St. If you are a Martin Scorsese fan then cast your mind back to the beginning of Gangs of New York when The Dead Rabbits are preparing themselves to go up against The Natives. The story follows a Blues Guitarist called Corey Harris who goes on a pilgrimage to find out more about his ancestors who first started playing the Blues and Scorsese's own knowledge of the music. Feel Like Going Home though really opened my mind to what the Blues really means and where it came from. It was good timing as well as I have just recently started listening to the likes of John Le Hooker and Muddy Waters. I said yes as it would start me off into watching his documentaries and if this is anything to go by the rest he has made then I have got to start building up my Scorsese Documentaries because after I saw this I thought Wow. A friend of mine knows about my interest in Scorsese films and asked me if I wanted the Feel Like Going Home episode on DVD directed by Martin Scorsese as a gift. I had not previously seen any of Scorsese's documentaries like My Voyage to Italy or a Personal Journey so I didn't really expect anything special from it. Just after Gangs of New York was released I heard about a series being made about The Blues and kind of shrugged it off afterwards.
